Raabta – the connection of love through different lives

Raabta is a Romantic Drama released in the year 2017. Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon played the lead roles as Shiv and Saira.

The Story:

Shiv, a Punjabi guy got an opportunity to work in Budapest. He was a playboy and living in a different country didn’t make any difference to that.

One day Shiv visited a chocolate shop with his foreign girlfriend. He was blown away after meeting Saira, who was the owner of the shop. Like an absolute creep he started following her to her place.

Saira used to live by herself. She used wake up every morning from a nightmare of drowning to death. Her parents died in a car accident in her childhood. The memory of the accident still haunted her in her sleep…

She dismissed over-friendly Shiv at first but couldn’t deny the uncanny connection she was feeling with him. She ended up sleeping with him!

Shiv too was feeling the connection, unlike his every other fling. He showed up in the restaurant where Saira went on a date with her boyfriend (yeah, she had one!) and made them break up.

Saira was kind of going with the flow, she didn’t feel any affection towards the guy. The break-up didn’t affect her at all, she was happy and carefree… Shiv and Kaira started living their best life together and one day Saira met a psychic who told about her repeated nightmares. She also hinted about history repeating itself soon again…

On a party Saira met a business man Zack, who was almost like her dream boy… Shiv was the person totally opposite of her nature but bonded really well. Zack on the other hand had the qualities Saira liked in general. Zack took interest in Saira and as soon as Shiv went on a business trip, he started taking advantage of the situation.

One day he mixed sedative in her drink, kidnapped her and took her to an island! When Saira woke up, she couldn’t believe her eyes… Zack wasn’t a nice dude after all, he was acting like a psychopath. He told her that they were meant to be together. In their past lives, they loved each other but were separated by destiny. He was looking for her everywhere and when he finally met her in the present life, he couldn’t take a chance and brought her to his place (of course as a captive!).

As she didn’t believe, Zack started showing her the painting that he made before even meeting her in that party…

Zack planned their wedding and it was all over the news. Shiv was astonished to find that out but he wasn’t able to reach to her.

She made several attempts to flee away from the place but failed due to the tight security. One day she jumped into the ocean and that brought memory of her past life back.

Hundreds of years ago, she was a warrior princess Saiba and Zack was her childhood friend. When their kingdom was attacked by a rival tribe, Zack (Kabir, then) was severely injured by them. Saiba went to avenge him and ended up falling in love with the attacker Jilaan.

Kabir felt betrayed and he attacked them back on the night the two got married. Kabir killed Jilaan in front of Saiba and she killed herself seeing that. After all this Kabir committed suicide as well for love.

The same chain of events was about to repeat itself again and this time Saira took command of her destiny. When Zack captured Shiv and Saira and threw Shiv in sea to drown to death, Saira saved his life. Shiv killed Zack. Shiva and Saira got married and they lived happily ever after.

My thoughts on the movie:

I think the movie was a bit weird. I couldn’t digest the fact that a womanizer like Shiv suddenly settled for the love of his past life.

Reincarnation is believed in our religion but meeting the same set of people over different lives-that is something quite too specific.

Raabta means connection, the story justifies the name!

Zack kidnapping Saira, taking her captive in a castle in an island- this looked very familiar to me… I cannot tell a movie that has the exact same story but this kidnap scene is uncannily familiar. For example the recent movie 365 Days too has this kind of portion where the mafia dude kidnaps a girl and forces her to live with him and fall in love with him. I think the idea of abducting women and forcing them to love you is common in entertainment industries across the world!

I really loved the chocolate-boy look of Shiv in this movie, on the other hand the look of Jilaan did not make any sense to me.

The present life portion was okay-ish and the past life segment did not go well because of the strange get-ups and way of talking. This is what I felt as an audience.

The guest appearance of Deepika in the song Raabta on Saira’s engagement with Zack felt so unnecessary and out of the place. The movie has some good songs too like Ik Vaari and Darasal, those truly conveys the love between Shiv and Saira. Sushant is a sweetheart and Kriti is a treat to the eyes, do watch the movie if you’re into Romantic movies!

Note:
“Kai Po Che” (2013) was Sushant’s first film. He also starred in Shuddh Desi Romance(2013), PK(2014), Detective Byomkesh Bakshy(2015), M. S. Dhoni the untold story(2016)Raabta(2017), Kedarnath(2018), Drive, Sonchiriya, Chhichhore (2019) and Dil Bechara(2020). Dil Bechara is Sushant’s last film that released after his death.
